Scope

The papers in this thematic collection will focus on the metallogeny and mineral deposits in the Palaeotethyan and Neotethyan geodynamic domains in the Western Asian sector of the Alpine–Himalayan Orogenic Belt (AHOB). Geographically, this sector includes Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkiye, Iraq and Pakistan, and its geology has been studied extensively in the last 12 years, mostly because of the continental collision events (i.e. Arabia–Eurasia and India–Eurasia) that directly controlled the crustal evolution, magmatism, landscape evolution and formation of ore deposits. These geological studies have concentrated mainly in the mode, tempo and geochemistry of volcanism, the types and emplacement processes of ophiolites, the nature and kinematics of seismogenic faults and the P–T patterns, causes and timing of metamorphism and the exhumation processes of metamorphic massifs and core complexes in the region. However, the distribution of mineral and ore deposits in the Palaeotethyan and Neotethyan domains of the AHOB, and the spatial–temporal interplay amongst magmatic, hydrothermal, metamorphic and tectonic processes that played a significant role in their formation have received less attention in the literature, despite their economic importance for the countries in the Near East.

The papers in this thematic collection will explore the types and distribution patterns of different mineral and ore deposits in the Paleotethyan and Neotethyan domains of the AHOB exposed in Iran, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Iraq and Pakistan, and examine the nature of the geological processes which operated during the rifting, seafloor spreading, collisional and postcollisional stages of the Tethyan evolution of the region forming those deposits. Mineral and ore deposit types in the Paleotethyan and Neotethyan domains are highly diverse and include base metal, skarn, iron oxide–copper-gold, orogenic gold, massive sulphide and chromitite deposits. By examining the structural features, geochemistry, fluid inclusions, stable isotopes, mineral and rock chemistry and tectonic boundary conditions of these deposits, this thematic collection will present some new concepts and conceptual models about the formation of different types of economically viable mineral/ore deposits. Individual papers will include geological maps, stratigraphic columnar sections and structural cross-sections, depicting the occurrence and geometry of the investigated deposits in 3D. Thus, geological, geochemical and geophysical observations and data will be integrated effectively to make the papers in this thematic collection truly interdisciplinary, playing a catalytic role in attracting further research, economic investment and academia–industry–government collaboration in this region's mining sectors.
